A grant for a new unique position within The Clean Earth Trust (CET) team has been awarded by the Social Investment Fund (SIF). The role of Repair Café Manager will be funded on a part-time basis for a fixed term of 12 months. The funding follows an 18-month pilot of the Repair Cafe project which continues to receive growing interest from the community.
The Repair Café has been regularly running weekly and monthly sessions since August 2020, during which, has repaired over 450 items - a mix of textiles, leatherware, toys and small household electrical items. The volunteer team has grown to 17 and acquired the Guernsey Clothes swap last summer which runs alongside its monthly pop-up Repair Café, held at the Golden Lion 12:30 – 4pm on the first Saturday of every month.
Sadie Siviter de Paucar, Lead Officer of SIF, said; “SIF is pleased to support this innovative initiative to reduce waste in our community by repairing an item to give it a new lease of life. We hope that the Repair Café will encourage a growing interest in mending, helping to move our community away from a throwaway culture.”
The diverse role is 20 hours per week and requires practical repair skills in one or more repair disciplines (textiles, furniture, electricals, etc.) alongside experience in business administration and leading projects / events independently. The ideal candidate will be able to look at broken or used materials and see potential for new life, be confident communicating with the public and a wide range of stakeholders and understand health and safety practices in a workplace environment, particularly with tools and equipment. “This is an exciting position in the charity, with loads of potential for growth and creativity. After successfully trialing the concept, the project has quickly outgrown the current ops capacity. We need a manager who’s passionate about repair, reuse and repurpose as we work towards reducing waste and cultivating a circular economy here in Guernsey. We’re looking for someone who’s confident to work independently at times, and with flexibility, especially as we navigate the growth and development of this young charity,” explains Helen Quin, Head of Operations at CET.
